THE SAINT-HUBERT AREA ...
THE SURPRISING AND UNEXPECTED ARDENNES (BELGIUM)

On 1 and 2 October 2004 the Convention Bureau Wallonia-Brussels, together with a long list of suppliers in the Saint-Hubert area organised a discovery tour entitled: "The Saint-Hubert area... the surprising and unexpected Ardennes"

It was a unique opportunity for event companies to discover the Ardennes area, which is not immediately associated with a MICE destination. This trip also expressed the Convention Bureau's wish to inform the MICE branch about the real synergy that exists in the area and that allows for "the difference" when it comes to quality products and itineraries.
The programme mentioned novel and exclusive 'outdoor' items in the heart of the Ardennes. A 'moving' trip by air and on land combined incentive activities and the discovery of seminar venues.

DAY 1 - 'MOVING' TRIP BY AND ON LAND

Val de Poix
Jacques Bourdon, Marketing and Event Manager at Hôtel Val de Poix on the banks of the river Lhomme, was impatient to get the programme going and, above all, this Ardennes enthusiast wanted to share his passion with the guests. In an exceptional setting the guests discovered this completely renovated hotel with its terraced gardens, its 42 luxury guest rooms and its meeting facilities. The two restaurants allowed the guests to sample all the tastes of the local produce and products. Le Val de Poix, a member of 'Logis de Belgique', is undoubtedly a privileged venue for seminars, as well as other moments of relaxation.

Roaming the Ardennes the other way...
The trip started when the guests took to the wheels of original 1952 Minerva jeeps! This proved to be an original and novel way to discover the most beautiful sites of an area that protects its fauna and flora. Throughout the day, coached by "Ardenne Safaris", each participant was trained on how to drive a vintage 4-wheel drive. This kind of trip can be supplemented with a visit to a craftsman's workshop, an old mill or the discovery of local products...

Haras du Sartay
A detour to this small paradise on earth will surprise everyone! On this 12-hectare domain, the owners offer exclusivity to groups of 12 to 50 people. The choice of activities is very broad: horse riding, archery, shooting, trampoline, golf, water sports on the lake or in the swimming pool... For the more adventurous among us there are also: quad bikes, death rides, race tracks on the property... On the first floor covering the stables, a large hall is available for group of 12 to 50 people.

Barbecue at the Castle: a topper of Arden Exclusiv' Events
A barbecue with Ardennes flavours allows everyone to discover the surprising inner court of Mirwart Castle. Arden Exclusiv' Events has the privilege of organising events on the castle grounds. This events department of Val de Poix is headed by Jacques Bourdon, also president of the E.T.N.A. Confederation (Tourism Entreprises 'Nature & Adventure' in Wallonia). Arden Exclusiv' Events offers a wide variety of novel outdoor relaxation activities. The concept is to link aviation and space with nature and landscape, focusing on respect for the environment.

Don't dream anymore... fly away!
Surprise... At the very start of the day the participants discovered that they were going to get initiated into the art of hang gliding or paragliding. For some this meeting with the forces of nature in a non-motorized flying machine meant panic, while for others it was a thrill. For all, it was something to remember for the rest of their lives. The 'Centre National de Vol à Voile de Saint-Hubert' masters all aspects of the art of flying, and it took extremely good care of its new disciples: briefings, practice in a flight simulator, and then... seatbelts fastened and take off!

An evening to awaken your senses
Back at the Hotel de Poix, just a quick vanity stop, and the guests started off on an evening full of surprises. It is not easy to blind taste regional Belgian beers during the "Belgian Beer Trophy", organised by the 'Confrérie de la St. Hubert' in the hotel's tavern. It proved to be even more difficult to name the wines that were tasted in the wine cellar of... the vicarage in the small village of Awenne. It was a real pleasure to listen to the animated explanations given by Luc Dewalque, proprietor of the 'Auberge du Sabotier'. He managed to open up our senses with his experienced know-how and delicacy. And then, long after midnight, we walked through the woods to listen to the call of the deer (only possible between 15 September and 10 October).

DAY 2 - DISCOVERY OF MEETING FACILITIES

Abbot's Palace
Although this day turned out to be somewhat calmer than the previous one, the visit to the Abbot's Palace of St Hubert started off with the same kind of passion. This prestigious building, adjacent to the Basilica, dates back to 1728 and is listed as "exceptional heritage of Wallonia". It is managed by the Province, offering spaces of all kinds, especially for exhibitions, meetings, cocktails... The recently renovated façade of the Abbot's Palace is a true marvel. A renovation programme for the state rooms will be started soon.

The Converserie
After a warm welcome from Baron Coppée, we visited the Converserie in Tenneville, a modern conference centre with traditional secular roots. The atmosphere of both the inner building and of the surrounding woods creates perfect working conditions. There is also the facility of exclusive use of the 22 three-star hotel rooms. The Converserie hosts meetings like management courses, scientific gatherings, prestigious receptions, concerts... (with the exception of dances). The centre can accommodate 200 to 250 guests. And when it comes to the "discovery of nature": the Converserie is ideally located amidst some 23,000 hectares of dense woods.

Beau Site
We had an "appetiser break" at the Beau Site, a small charming and discrete inn in Mirwart. This allowed us to discover this inn with a large capacity of 14 people, adjacent to 8 hotel rooms that were decorated, in person, by inn keeper Catherine Wells.

The Auberge du Sabotier
At the Auberge du Sabotier in Awenne we experienced moments of sheer culinary delight. Here, we met gastronomic craftsman Luc Dewalque again, who proposed the 'Terroir' menu, a refined high-class meal which he prepared in his open kitchen. This location is perfectly suited to "culinary teambuilding". Once you open the door of this inn, a member of "Relais du Silence", you will discover an easy-going atmosphere, and the clock will tick the hours away in calm and serenity.
Twenty refined guestrooms and two meeting rooms complete this charming house that dates back to the 17 th century.

Euro Space Center
And to end this journey... let's land at the Euro Space Center for the discovery of a space aged and futuristic environment. Be it an incentive, a meeting, a presentation, an evening or a mix of all these, the Euro Space Center offers its rooms and infrastructure to create an unusual event. An astronaut's training session, a flight in the space shuttle, a drink in the planetarium, an evening around the American space shuttle... These are just some of the possibilities offered by the centre.
