brxxxlBRU XXL, the new city guide
Last month BITC launched the first edition of BRU XXL, a handy booklet with all the latest information on what’s going on in Brussels, published every other month. It contains events, close-ups on different themes, recommended walks, shopping and eating out…

“We have to show how attractive we are to our visitors,” explains Philippe Close, the BI-TC President. “Our role is to lead them to things which are worth seeing and doing in Brussels. In addition to all the classics, we must demonstrate we are the modern, dynamic young capital we really are. That’s why we have decided to produce this regular new city guide.”

Two bi-lingual versions are available – one in French/English and the other in Dutch/German – from Brussels International.

36 different events throughout the year are highlighting Brussels as capital of the comic strip in 2009. There’s a wide range of entertaining exhibitions including Belgian Comics: Frames of Reference at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, on until 28 June. A must for enthusiasts of the 9th Art and those who want an insight into contemporary Belgium and 20 of its most famous comic strip authors…

The Belgian Comic Strip Centre (CBBD/ BCB), in its superb Art Nouveau home, is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. And you’re also likely to get a surprise as you walk through the streets and come across giant outdoor murals in the most unlikely places. 2-3 are added each year and there are now almost 40 of them around the city. They make a great theme for a walking tour.

For Tintin fans…
Due to open in June, coinciding with the Comic Strip Year is the new Hergé Museum, designed by French urban architect Christian de Portzamparc. This original museum is built in the shape of an elongated prism which appears to float on the forest of ancient trees. It’s just a short trip from Brussels to the university town of Louvain-la-Neuve. The museum comprises 3600m2 for permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as special events.

It’s the big moment all of us in Brussels have been waiting for. The museum will also be a unique backdrop for special events - 170 for banquets and 105 in concert-style.
