Pop-up beach bar in Londerzeel

Zanzibar was the place to be for a cocktail in the best company in Merchtem last summer – with 25,000 guests, the pop-up bar turned out to be a great success. This year, the bar moved to Londerzeel, for a bigger and more professional concept.

The organisers hope to attract double the crowds from last year during their run from June to September. The venue is suitable for networking events, after work drinks and VIP treatments, and it also comes with a pool.

These one-day excursions by the non-profit charity Caritas invite you to experience the challenging life and impressive work of farmers in the mountain regions of Switzerland.

Diving

The Korean Convention Bureau published a couple of exciting new things to do in South Korea. You can visit indoor sports entertainment centres or make your own traditional alcohol, but our favourites are the Haenyeo: female divers from Jeju Island, who dive ten meters deep without air tanks to gather sea urchins and clams.

Most of these ladies are 80 years old and still dive almost every day. To keep the culture alive, MICE groups can now join a dive with them and catch their own supper.

Another human job taken by our future robot overlords. Check out the video, click here.

BBT Online in Switzerland – Destination report

BBT Online was part of a study trip organised by the Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau and its partners. It was organised from 24 to 26 March and took us to the beautiful city of Lucerne and the region surrounding it.

We would discover the many assets of the city itself, but would also venture into the mountains to discover a completely car-free winter sport destination.

Hugo Slimbrouck and BBT Online’s publisher Karin de Graauw went on a fam trip to investigate. Check it out here.

BBT Online’s bucket list – Kenneth Leys

Every month we ask some prominent MICE personalities to share their bucket list.

What are the five things they desperately want to do or achieve before they seize to be, push up the daisies, kick the bucket or go to meet their maker? In short, what would they definitely want to do before they die?

This month we asked Kenneth Leys of NH Hotels.

5-6 September, Mexico City: IBTM Americas. IBTM America and IBTM Latin America merged into one bigger trade show to be organised in Mexico City this September. www.ibtmamericas.com

MISCELLANEOUS
For the first time ever the Flower Carpet on the Brussels Grand-Place adopts a Latin American theme. This summer it is devoted to Guanajuato, a Mexican region with an exceptionally rich culture, history and flower tradition. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Grand-Place becoming a Unesco World Heritage site, visitors will also be treated to a floral exhibition at the Bourse square.
BCD Meetings & Events recently launched “Simple Meetings”: a self-service system that allows users to choose where and how they book meetings. This easy to use tool allows the booker to pick the meeting space and sleeping rooms that fit their specific needs.

HOTELS & RESTAURANTS
QO is a recently opened lifestyle hotel in Amsterdam’s Amstel quarter. It combines luxury with sustainability. There is a Dutch restaurant on the ground floor, and a bar with a view on the 21st.
www.qo-amsterdam.com
Radisson Blu Antwerp – across from the Central Station – just finished the renovation of its hotel and meeting rooms. This was part of the complete refurbishment of the hotel, which will cost € 9 million. Radisson Blu Antwerp is where our international guests will be staying for BBT Online’s b2b workshop on 25 June.
Felix Pakhuis is an Antwerp venue straight across from the MAS Museum, housed in an old storage facility. It comes with two restaurants, several rooms for events and a nice covered street running through the middle of the building that can also be booked for events. They are one of many local suppliers on our workshop on 25 June. There is a special promotion running for events still organised this summer, mail events@felixpakhuis.nl - www.felixpakhuis.nu

AVIATION
Being a pilot is still very much a men only business. Businesstraveler.nl published a list ranking airlines on the percentage of female pilots they employ. United came out on top with a measly 7.4%. Most others don’t even reach 5%. Be the change you want to see, girls!
businesstraver.nl
Brussels Airport will test a self-driving electrical shuttle bus to get people to the airplanes. The first tests will be carried out somewhere in 2020 and by the end of that year they should be in use.
FTI Ticketshop is a b2b tool for travel agents to help ensure their clients get the best flight rates. After growing a client base in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France, it came to Belgium this March. www.fti-ticketshop.be
Travel managers often lose track of what happens with unused flight tickets. A waste of money, because more than 50% of them could be (partially) refunded. Lots of people don’t know this, which makes the money disappear into the pockets of the airlines. This is why BCD travel developed a service tracking unused tickets and automating the refunding process.

PEOPLE
Dominique Raguis will stop representing Forte Village – Sardaigne and four other luxury properties on the Belgian market, and will take on a more web marketing related role for the properties. Maurizio Maggi will now take on her former role.
Emily Ponsaerts is the new Business Development Manager for Accor Hotels in Belgium. Before this, she worked as their Sales Manager Meetings & Events.
After eighteen years of representing the Malta Tourism Authority in Belgium and Luxembourg, Malta and Marianne Hoogeveen will part ways. Glenaki is taking over market representation of the island.
