online campain

The effect of online campaigns on internet users works longer than originally thought and does incite to brand recognition and action. This was the main conclusion of a report based on research in the US and Europe by comScore.

In Europe 72% of people who saw an online campaign were tempted to click further to the website of the advertiser and 94% were tempted to go online and research into the brand of the advertiser. These figures also illustrate that online campaigns do much better in Europe than in the States. ComScore have a number of explanations for this fact; less adverts on pages, differences in the creative execution of the adverts and the difference in reaction to stimulation by advertising between the two continents.

The results show that the obsession of judging a campaign by the number of clicks has been rendered obsolete. Clicks only show us the direct impact of an advert, but as comScore tells us, these studies also show us that internet is effective as a dormant medium for building up a brand name.

The smiles of South Africa – Big year for South Africa - Destination Report

Just 2 months to go to all the excitement of Africa’s first ever World Cup....But it’s also a time for club 100Anniversaries, celebrations and commemorating milestones from the recent past.

It’s the 20th Anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s walk to freedom from Robben Island, and 15 years since South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup which played such a vital role in his strategy to forge the Rainbow Nation. Make sure you see Clint Eastwood’s recent film Invictus starring the eternal Morgan Freeman. Even if you don’t know the first thing about rugby, you’ll be thrilled by the sheer emotion and the optimism.

In the words of Nelson Mandela himself, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”.  Although there is still much to do, he laid some very solid foundations.

Speaking Out – April Fooled & BEEFed?
MPI Future Watch!

Our news about the birth of BEEF, Belgium’s Events Federation, turned out to be a great scoop for BBT Online’s Take 5 on 1 April. There were a lot of laughs and quite a few people took the news seriously.

Some telephones indeed got pretty hot, especially chez BAPCO President, Sam van de Kerckhof who was besieged with enquiries and dragged out of an important meeting (Sam, our sincere apologizes).

Underneath the rumour and the humour was indeed a serious issue. We have so many acronyms which even people in our own industry find difficult to keep up with. But spare a thought for those on the outside – the politicians with their traditional short attention spans, the general business media and above all the poor man-woman-on-the-street. They just haven’t a clue where to start.

It is also incredible how many different professions make up this fascinating and potentially much more powerful industry which certainly does need to speak with a SINGLE voice, not just in one city for one week, but throughout the year in the whole of Belgium/Europe. Click here to read more.

This year’s FutureWatch, produced by Meeting Professionals International (MPI) in partnership with American Express, drew responses from 1,832 MPI members representing 39 countries and 70 chapters and clubs, including 967 meeting and event planners and 813 suppliers.

The survey found initial signs of cautious optimism about the industry’s prospects for 2010, combined with a sense of realism about the new realities that meetings and events will face.

Respondents predict that:
  • Competitive pricing will be one of the main cornerstones of the business relationships that underpin a successful event and an effective industry.
  • Planners and suppliers will both take a back-to-basics approach to meeting and event transactions, in which value and quality will consistently trump frills, extras, and special
  • deals.

Crisis Phase 2 – If you thought the crisis is over … we invite you to think again
2 more presidents and their views on the crisis
Sam van de KerckhofSam van de Kerckhof
President BAPCO

If 2009 was without any doubt the year of the crisis felt by all members of BAPCO sometimes indirectly because of the difficulties encountered by their clients to find sponsoring and with lower budgets, 2010 is without doubt the ‘sustainable’ year.

The word is used in all its forms and permutations… A conference has got to be sustainable, and so does the PCO!  You would hope that the clients have also followed the trend, unfortunately old habits die hard.

President Initiative

Last year saw a reduced business income for our members due to several reasons on which I will elaborate further on. This year most of our members expect to stabilize the figures which still means a step backwards in comparison to 2008 of course.

History has taught us that unfortunately we do not always get what we expect so caution is needed and let’s have a reality check on a regular basis.
The reason for the move backwards in 2009 can be filed under two categories:
