Exclusive interview with Eric Rozenberg,
CMP, CMM Chairman of MPI Board of Directors

Eric RozenbergWe cannot say it enough, Belgium may be a small country, but it has definitely produced many great men and women. In the year when Belgium has produced the first European President, July 1st was the date that the country took on the Presidency of the European Union and…..the start of the Chairman of the MPI Board of Directors year by a Belgian: Eric Rozenberg! We met with the brand new Chairman in his offices to discuss his coming year as Chairman and what it means to him.

Eric immediately comes to the heart of the matter: he feels – and the majority of his colleagues with him – that the whole meeting planners industry is still totally underestimated in Europe. “Do you realize that the combined buying power of all MPI members represents a staggering 16.9 billion USD? If MPI were a global company it would be up there with international biggies such as Whirlpool, JC Penney or United Airlines!!”

MPIHe continues: ”If I had one wish it would be to help our members to better utilize meetings. The perception, especially in Europe, of meetings is still very low, we need to become more professional and help executives understand that meetings should be part of their strategy as meetings help to execute the strategy of a company.

European Airlines ring alarm bell!
At Imex INCON executives presented the second annual INCON survey of the global association conference market which forecasts optimistic projections for 2010 and 2011, signaling that the worst effects of the recent global recession are abating.

Research topics included sources of business, event attendance, industry trends, conference services, competition and employment.

Overall delegate numbers, key performance indicators for the meetings industry appear stable or Agendabetter than 2009 emphasizing a shift in the market with delegates more willing and able to attend conferences. A complete survey report providing a detailed statistical breakdown of the findings is available on

European Airlines

Airlines should bear no financial burden for the care of passengers resulting from events that are outside their control and the law that obliges them to do so must be amended before routes become unsustainable and jobs are lost.

This is the message given by the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) to the European Council of Transport Ministers prior to its meeting on 24 June to discuss passenger care obligations imposed on airlines by EU Regulation 261/2004 in the context of the volcanic ash crisis.

BBT Online & Malta Tourism authority join forces at Chateau St Anne

Early July BBT Online and the Malta Tourism Authority joined forces and invited corporate and incentive buyers on 2 different days to join them at the elegant Chateau St Anne in Brussels.

This private club situated next to the impressive Val Duchesse, is a great venue for the smaller, more intimate events such as a presentation lunch. The function rooms on the ground and first floor and the magnificent terrace overlooking the immaculate gardens coupled to excellent cuisine made both events enjoyable for all.

Among the 38 planners, Eric Rozenberg, the brand new Chairman of the MPI Board and the new President of Initiative, Frank Bouckaert. Marianne Hoogeveen gave a short but clear presentation on the Meetings & Events venues in Malta, some of the major hotels (Hilton, Westin and Corinthia) and the DMC Colours of Malta & Air Malta were also represented and several lucky winners will shortly go and discover for themselves what a great nearby (Air Maltla flies daily!) destination Malta is.

Jeroen Janssens, Congress Organiser at European Resusciation Councel and Katie Vandebroucke, Event Manager at Damart were the lucky winners during the Corporate/Association Event. In the middle of the picture Nadine Brincat and Marianne Hoogeveen of Malta Tourism Authority.
6th Switzerland Meeting Trophy
XIV MITM Euromed
Meeting Trophy

For the second year in a row, the Nordic Countries Team won the Switzerland Meeting Trophy organized the beginning of July by Switzerland Tourism. This unconventional rally, in which 83 congress and incentive travel specialists took part, was designed to let them take a closer look at Switzerland and its facilities for hosting professional events.

During this 6th edition, participants travelled by boat, by train, on foot and by car from Zurich to Lucerne, via the Grisons and the shores of Lake Lucerne, combining business with pleasure and trying out potential meeting venues for their customers.

The fourteenth edition of MITM Euromed, Meetings and Incentive Travel Market, took place in Lloret de Mar, Spain derived from the desire of this resort destination in attracting to Lloret de Mar the maximum business possible from congresses, conferences, and incentive travel groups.

To  MITM in Lloret de Mar have come congresses, conferences, events and incentive travel organizers from 22 countries. MITM received more than 200 requests from congresses and events organizers to participate in MITM in Lloret – so a good number of them were not able to come to Lloret de Mar, because of the trade show’s format, which limits the number of participants -. In total, MITM had 250 participants.

Wish you were here: La Mamounia!

La Mamounia in Marrakech was already a legend before it closed down for 3 years (!) for a total renovation. Since its re-opening the beginning of this year superlatives are not enough to describe the absolute uniqueness of this place.

As the interior designer Jacques Garcia, who took the project on, describes: “Reminiscent of a far away time, La Mamounia evokes a modern day fairytale. Such a haven is often sought after but rarely found. Combining the best the modern world has to offer with traditional values, La Mamounia provides an experience so unique, it becomes an integral part of the myth that defines it.”

Early July BBT Online visited La Mamounia during a long weekend on invitation of Anne Schelfhof of Tellus in co-operation with the Moroccan DMC Business Class. In our next edition more on this trip ….
Going home after a Mamounia experience is hard, coming back is nearly a guarantee!
