The path to creative thinking

Cyriel KortlevenLast March, Cyriel Kortleven was one of the keynote speakers on the Site EMEA Forum in Antwerp. He gave an interesting and well-attended lecture on creativity and innovation in the event industry.

BBT Online wanted to know more about the subject, and sat down with the man himself for an in-depth interview on creativity, the curse of knowledge and the less-is-more principle.

La Terrasse de l’Hippodrome
The tram experience is back!
La Terrasse

La Terrasse is a temporary beach bar in Brussels opening annually for business from 23 May to 7 July. The venue of choice is l’Hippodrome, an old racecourse on the border of the Sonian Forest.

Want to drink a cocktail, have a snack next to the pool, play some pétanque with your feet in the sand or spend an exotic night close to Brussels? This is the place to go, from 12 am to 12 pm!

The Tram Experience returns for more gourmet goodness! In 2012, double Michelin-starred chefs from all over the country created the dishes served on board. This year, the spotlight will be exclusively turned on celebrated chefs from Brussels. One meal means tasting dishes made by two or three different chefs, making for a unique dining experience!

The tram experience kicked off on 14 May. For bookings, click here.
Fun on the beach in Ghent!

DOK is a temporary venue in a part of Ghent (next to the Handelsdok at Ghent Dampoort) where a new city quarter is planned in the near future. Now it is the perfect place for little concerts, parties, workshops or just to relax.

The DOK canteen opens from Friday to Sunday for a variety of events, and can be privatised as well (until 29 September). DOK Beach opens on 31 July: a place to relax and have fun, or enjoy a little drink or snack.

The good life in Utrecht
Ubuntu Beach

Ubuntu Beach is a new beach club in Zandvoort (The Netherlands). It’s a nice looking place to relax and have some drinks while you hang around on the beach. You can have a quality dinner here as well.

It’s more than suited for company parties, gala dinners, and cocktail receptions. The exclusive beach house can accommodate 100 guests and is separated from the rest of the pavilion.

The venue can easily be privatized for meetings or brainstorm sessions.
Stan & Co

Stan & Co is a new restaurant on the Ganzenmarkt in Utrecht, Holland. ‘Good food for good people’ is the slogan they work with, and it shows. The place looks hip: a little rough and industrial, but with a very nice atmosphere at the same time.

The look was inspired by New York’s Meatpacking district, and the waiters look a bit like the venue: rough, sometimes unshaved or covered in tattoos. Don’t let their looks deceive you: they can make you a very tasty lunch or dinner.
Modern elegance in the Ardennes

Looking for a comfortable, relaxing location for your next event? Two beautiful old guesthouses are waiting for you near the Lesse River. Both were recently renovated in a contemporary style and offer every modern comfort.

They are suited for business as well as leisure activities. Au Dessus de Bie is located on a hill near the picturesque village of Daverdisse. This charming old farmhouse comes with two outbuildings and a wonderful garden and can accommodate a maximum of 34 guests.

In the pretty village of Sechery lies the aptly named Sech’ry country house. This venue is bigger and suited for a maximum of 60 guests. It comes with a large kitchen, a 14m high ceiling and a BBQ pavilion.

Rooftop hiking in Stockholm
A unique hotel experience!

Stockholm is one Europe’s most beautiful capitals. Most people explore it at street level, which is already very exciting. However, if you really want to get a sense of the city's beautiful architecture and historical buildings, if you’re ready for a challenge – and not afraid of heights, then it’s worth going on a guided tour on the rooftops of Stockholm.

The hike is a unique combination of climbing and sightseeing – well secured with safety equipment of course. Feel like Spiderman (Spödermön?) in Stockholm!

Who didn’t love tree houses as a kid? Now you can stay in one as an adult! The Tree Hotel is located in Harads, Sweden, near the Lule river. It offers a unique hotel experience: magnificent, contemporarily designed tree rooms high in the air in the middle of unspoiled nature. Some of the designs are simply crazy: from mirror-like cubes to flying saucers.

Rejuvenate in the Swedish forest, enjoying the marvellous views of the river and – if you’re lucky – the northern lights.
Wish we were here: budget edition!

Not every venue has to be an expensive palace to impress us. This hotel is a good example: Riad Anata is a beautiful and elegant little hotel in Fez, Morocco, restored by Belgian architect Audrey Vermeersch.

There are only five rooms, and each of them is delightful. Enjoy the wonderful beds, the hearty breakfast, the faultless service and the rooftop terrace looking over the world’s largest medina.

Riad Anata offers rooms from €95 to €125 and dinner at €25 per person. Click here for a calendar of activities and here for things to do in Fez.

Hotels with fascinating histories

BBT Online had the pleasure to join the Rocco Forte group led by Carole Vallet-Gallou to IMEX. Our stay in Frankfurt was Villa Kennedy, part of the Rocco Forte Chain. This luxury hotel is constructed with three newly buildings built around the beautiful and traditional 1904 Villa Speyer. It offers 163 deluxe bedrooms and suites, a grand ballroom and eight meeting rooms.
The evening function they organised on the 1st evening of Imex was superb: a party like in the good old days!

Rocco Forte Hotels together with their property in London; Brown’s Hotel, which celebrates their 175th Anniversary, is one of the exhibitors on our Speed Date Workshop on 26 August. Registration is already possible via or Note that this event is meant for professional Benelux incentive and event agents and PCO's only.

Tuning your event to suit generation X/Y
Go with the Flowh!

Visitors of today’s exhibitions and events are often members of Generation X and Y. Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre published a report on the latest insights regarding these generations, based on qualitative research and sociocultural trend analysis.

Using this data, TrendsActive explains what the insights mean for the event business. What are their dominant values and how can you use them to your benefit as an event organiser? All findings are nicely and clearly illustrated with various examples. Interesting read!

Click here for the full article.

Flowh could become the Twitter of the event world. Its purpose is quite simple: it’s a social medium that allows you to follow and share events. The info you get is quite to the point: date, location, a link to the site and a short description looking like a tweet.

The events appear chronologically and can be sorted by date. If you create your own account, you can publish, share and follow all the events you want. You can make a personal agenda that can be shared with your friends. Flowh could become an excellent new medium for event organisers to attract more people.
